Oakwood was incorporated by Henry Patterson, the founder of NCR, the National Cash Register Corporation. Beginning with summer homes and horse estates, Oakwood blossomed in population following the Great Dayton Flood when people sought to build homes at a higher elevation. One of Oakwood’s first residents was Orville Wright. An interesting fact about Oakwood is that the safety department (police, fire and emergency services) are crossed trained for each other’s job and work in all capacities.
Oakwood is completely surrounded by other suburbs, making new development nearly impossible. Because of this, Oakwood has been able to keep its neighborhood rich with the cultural distinctions of yesteryear. The neighborhoods are full of Tudor, Colonial Revival, Gothic Revival, Italian Renaissance, Spanish Eclectic, Mission, Prairie and Craftsman homes on wide, tree-lined streets. The sense of magic here is created in a park-like setting of winding lanes still lighted by old style gas lamps. The few newer developments have been designed to harmonize with the historic ambiance. In every neighborhood there is a sense of leisure and serenity, of room enough and time enough for gracious living.
Transportation
Oakwood is located just south of downtown Dayton, with an approximate five-minute drive and just blocks off I-75. The Dayton International Airport is 15 miles away from Oakwood. Hospitals
The Miami Valley, Kettering, Good Samaritan, and Children's Hospitals are five to fifteen minutes away.
Shopping
Oakwood's premiere shopping district is located on and around Far Hills Avenue. The area includes some of Dayton's finest restaurants and chic shops. Nationally known shops such as Chico's and Talbot's can be found next to local favorites such as the Dorothy Lane Market. Local merchants provide general merchandise and services conveniently located for residents.
Recreation
Over 44 acres of parks and green space is located in Oakwood. Neighborhood parks include 'Shafor', 'Orchardly' and 'Fair Ridge', with playgrounds, tennis courts, a swimming pool and picnic areas. 'Huffman Park' features several trails to enjoy including the Mad River Trail, Buckeye Trail and the North Country Trail. 'Smith Gardens' is a small green space with beautiful springtime blooms.
The Oakwood Historical Society is open to all residents who wish to join. For golf enthusiasts, the Dayton Country Club lies on the Oakwood border. A beautiful 18-hole golf course is the first in a long list of amenities the Dayton Country Club has to offer. The Oakwood Club offers exceptional dining. It’s a gracious neighborhood with all the amenities to support the traditional lifestyle.
